Claim:I believe aquariums such as SeaWorld should be shut down.
Exposition: Besides the act that large, attracting aquariums have been open for the public, there is nothing amazing of truly beneficial to hold many marine mammals in a small and enclosed tank.
Ethos: After the hard hitting documentary Blackfish came out in 2013, SeaWorld became a target to be shutdown entirely. Blackfish was a documentary based off of former SeaWorld employees discussing their time at SeaWorld, the truth behind SeaWorld, and the whole story behind Tilikum and the death of Dawn Brancheau. Former trainers pushed for SeaWorld to be shut down, but former SeaaWorld trainer Bridgette Pirtle had a certain side within this debate. Pirtle states that the film was a reason to make additional money and a "dirty" way to get SeaWorld to be shut down, but yet she is still against animals to be a "form of entertainment", and SeaWorld's breeding program should be shut down. This shows that even SeaWorld's trainers are against the documentary yet also against the whole entertainment aspect SeaWorld finds necessary to promote.
Pathos: Unfortunately, marine animals living within SeaWorlds glass tanks are not treated properly. Animals in these tanks, especially in San Diego, are exposed to the hot San Diego sun 24/7, with no shade to rest in during shows. This causing Sunburns on thses animals that are covered with Black Zinc Oxide as sunblock, but usually applied after the sunburn has appeared. Orcas at SeaWorld were kidnapped from their families and natural habitats just to be placed into a tank at your local Aquarium. Collapsed dorsal fins on these marine animals are commonly seen and are resulted by the unnatural environment of captivity within SeaWorld's. SeaWorld confines these animals in tanks that to their large size are like our own bathtubs, restricting them of their freedom to swim like they would in the wild.
Logos: In Marine parks, these sea mammals routinely die prematurely from stress and other captivity related causes. SeaWorld brings animals into confinement, leading these animals to become violent, bored, and insane. All Marine animals are highly intelligent, but placing them in a small, 40ft tank restricts them of their natural habitat created for them. SeaWorld teaches the public false representation of these animals. These animals are slaves under SeaWorld, such as being deprived of their freedom of movement and forbidden to establish personal territory and exploration. Also forcing them to breed unnaturally and leading them to become bored and lonely.
Acknowledge: Yes Marine aquariums allow us to learn about these precious Marine mammals and protects them from possible future extinction.
Rebute/Refute: We can always observe and learn drastically more about these animals while they are living within their own natural habitat with their own families. This will allow them to live freely and ultimately more happier, rather than living in a concrete tank. This would work because this would create certain jobs that requires people to watch and protect animals within certain areas they are allowed to live safely and naturally in.
Counterargument: We should keep aquariums such as SeaWorld ONLY to protect the animals that are incredibly close to extinction or are in future harm in the wild due to poachers.
